Yixin was born in China, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology. He then moved to Japan to pursue further studies at the Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University. He worked in Professor Uesugi’s Chemical Biology Lab, focusing on chemically modifying melanin in cells. Through his 2-year Master’s project, Yixin became curious in melanocytes—the melanin-producing cells—as well as melanoma and skin development. Besides conducting cell experiments, he also participated in compound synthesis and purification. This interdisciplinary study combining synthetic chemistry and cell biology also sparked his interest in various chemical tools used to manipulate cellular behavior .
In September 2024, Yixin joined the Gilmour Lab as a PhD student. Outside the lab, he enjoys hiking, sketching, writing, and reading good stories.
